The Kalinago “uprising” on September 19th 1930 was an upheaval in the Carib Territory where armed police with orders to search for smuggled goods, clashed with disgruntled members of the indigenous population. The ensuing riot left a number of Caribs hurt and two dead. The battered police made a hasty retreat to nearby Marigot. The involvement of the then Colonial Administrator further complicated things.
The Carib Council, through the office in Salybia, commemorates September 19th with a week of events around that date.
Events include a youth rally, debates and honoring of Carib Elders. There are also the annual Miss Kalinago and Princess Natari competitions.
