Christian “Georgi” George

 

Christian George “Georgi” emerged as a force in Dominican art in 1977. Born in Fond St. Jean, a small fishing village on the south – east coast of Dominica. He attended the Point Carib Government School and the Dominica Grammar School. He is called a Primitive Artist; who is self taught and has developed his own unique style.

Christian’s first major work was the stage design for Harlem(Newton) music festival, with Luftus Emmanuel. He then went on to do wall and ceiling art for Dominica’s first discotheque, The Cave and more. He also went to Antigua and painted another disco and did T shirt printing.

In Dominica he had jobs doing sign paintings for commercial places, and experimenting with house paints on celotex and cloth; did carvings on wood and soft stone.

His first public street art exhibition was held at the Old Market, other exhibitions at the old market; he hosted other exhibitions at the St. Gerald’s Hall, the St. Martin’s Girl School, the Old Mill, Roseau Public Library, and a major exhibition at the Garrison in Barbados, and the St. Croix Public Library.

He migrated to the USA; graduated as a nurse; raised a family; and after roughly 22 years of not painting, He is back doing what he loves! He is now retired and lives in Queens, New York and is a member of the Long Island Black Artist Association and The Southern Queens Park Association; exhibitions held yearly throughout Long Island NY.

Georgi is a true Dominican patriot, and reflects that in his work, all about this beautiful island.
